deadmau5 “Meowingtons Hax 2K11″ now available

The concert film is now out on BluRay and DVD. How does one go from filming a band to filming a DJ? There is quite a difference yet, there are some common angles. In the end, you want to capture the energy and the interaction between deadmau5 and his fans. The music, like all styles of music, has tension and resolution, it has form and punctuation. Our editor, Martin Julien, did a superb job in conveying the story of what it felt like being there that night. François and I captured the show with 12 cameras. 4 of them were DSLR cameras roaming around the audience. 3 were cranes. 1 was a high speed camera from which we created slow motion movements. The slow motion treatment added a nice effect and lends itself well to this musical environment.

Frampton Comes Alive!!!

We’re proud to announce that we will be filming Peter Frampton on his Frampton Comes Alive 35th Anniversary Tour next month in New York City. The show features the entire iconic album from beginning to end as well a second set featuring his other hits. We’re quite proud to be involved in this wonderful production.

I personally remember that album as one we all had to have back in high school. It was also the first time I had ever noticed a fretless bass (inside cover photos).

It’s too early to talk about release information, but we are planning to deliver final masters of the film before June.

Most of the Brasse Camarade videos are on YouTube on the FullStereoTV channel. We’ve also created some new clips with the lyrics scrolling. Instead of just having a a neutral background, we added some clips and photos created with phone cameras and small cameras. Eventually, we will have the complete Brasse Camarade catalog uploaded for your listening, viewing and streaming pleasure.

Deadmau5 Live in Toronto

What a wonderful evening it was. We don’t have the official count, but there must have been 25,000 people at the Roger Centre on Saturday for a wonderful evening with Deadmau5. It was his homecoming in many ways and we are proud to have been the ones to capture the moment on film. We had an arsenal of cameras including 8 x HDCam and 5 x DSLR and we had a dozen audience microphones capturing the ambiance.

We started to edit and mix the show for DVD and broadcast today. Aural Psynapse is already available on iTunes and re-broadcasts of the original webcast will be announced soon on www.deadmau5.com

Wonderful Drummers = Wonderful Musicians

How fortunate we have been over the years to have worked with some of the best and most respected drummers in the world. Along the way, we learned something new from each one we have filmed and recorded. Neil Peart (Rush). Terry Bozzio (Zappa Plays Zappa). Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater). Ian Paice (Deep Purple). Zack Starkey (The Who). Joey Jordison (Slipknot). Jeff “Tain” Watts (Branford Marsalis Quartet). Joe Travers (Zappa Plays Zappa). Jeff Campitelli (Joe Satriani). Arthur Latin (Harry Connick, Jr.). Ray Luzier (Korn). Jim Bogios (Counting Crows). Martin Chambers (The Pretenders). Slim Jim Phantom (The Stray Cats). John Sands (Aimee Mann). Talk about an all-star team.

The sounds produced by these remarkable individuals are as unique as there are species of birds and songs. At the beginning, each species of bird had an “original” and every bird has since imitated that original. The same could be argued for these incredible musicians. They know what they want and like but most especially, they know what they do not like.

The constant reaction we got from each one was a positive one when we suggested we augment the microphone choices and placement for our recordings. The thing that set them apart was the configuration of their instrument, from the toms to the snare(s) to the cymbals. Once you get to hear these drummers in isolated sound in a recording truck and get to see them up close in action, you understand why they are where they are. Their very personal contribution to a group or an artist’s sound it is just that, very personal and unique. Some may use the same gear, but they do not sound the same, not even close. Some are ahead of the beat, some are on, some are a little behind. They all play with time and control the music like the asphalt on the road. No recording school could ever prepare you for the diversity of music and styles within musical styles and techniques these musicians have. The general public and music fan does not immediately think of drummers as having a unique voice, but they do. Their unique contributions are not always in flash and bravado but in grooves and often musical restraint. It’s not always what they do, but what they don’t do. Studying a drummer is a thesis in human behaviour and development. Drummers are like no other musician on stage. We should know. When we toured and recorded with various bands, we played with over a dozen drummers. They all played the same songs. Our band changed sound from drummer to drummer. It was quite a revelation. It truly was like changing singers.

What a privilege it has been for us to produce, record and direct these most impressive musicians.
